Men sat looking over towards Russell Wharf
Three men sat on timber bench Russell waterfront looking across to Russel Wharf.
Two hundred years of stories to discover. As you stroll round Russell Waterfront today you’re walking back in time. The town’s original street plan and names from1843 are still intact and feature some of New Zealand’s oldest and most significant historic buildings.
Some of the historic buildings along Russell’s waterfront date back to the early days of its settlement, when the town was known as Kororāreka. The sacking of Kororāreka in 1845 during war between local Māori chiefs and British forces destroyed many buildings in the town, as did subsequent fires, but some dating back to the 1830s and 1840s have survived.
